Congratulations to Charlotte (Skylar) Freeman for coming runner up in the Chris Frost Volunteer of the Year Award at the Merton Partnership Civic Pride Volunteer Awards 2024!

Focus Surrey volunteer Skylar was presented with her trophy at the Merton Civic Pride Volunteer Awards ceremony at Wimbledon AFC Football Club on Friday June 7th. There were more than 550 nominees for the 10 awards.

The awards coincided with #nationalvolunteersweek2024 National Volunteers Week 2024. Skylar is one of more than 420 volunteers who have supported Focus Surrey since its inception in September 2016.

The management team at Focus Surrey nominated Skylar for the award as she embodies the spirit of volunteerism, deserving recognition for her invaluable contributions to the community. Skylar has volunteered as a play assistant for the past two terms at Focus Surrey.

A student at Merton College, part of South Thames Colleges Groups, Skylar is a neurodiverse volunteer with dyspraxia who overcomes her own difficulties to support children with Autism. Skylar uses her walking stick for balance but is still able to run, jump and play with the children each Saturday.

Skylar is a caring and compassionate volunteer, who is energetic and enthusiastic. She is always wanting to learn more so she can give the best support to the children.

Skylar cares about the students and ensures they are getting the best support from her.  A great team player - she supports her fellow play assistants and collaborates with her team lead to ensure her students are happy.

Skylar has also done well to learn how to teach alternative methods of communication and how ABA principles can be applied in this way. The team at Focus Surrey are very grateful for her hard work and enthusiasm.

Skylar has also volunteered two evenings at our SEN discos, helping to create a welcoming space so that children and young people with disabilities can enjoy a fun night of music and dance.

Skylar's return to Focus Surrey for a second term speaks volumes about her dedication and commitment. Her boundless energy and unwavering kindness create a positive atmosphere, enriching the lives of the children she serves. With a focus on communication, she empowers them to express themselves and fosters meaningful connections. Skylar's consistent devotion and passion for making a difference make her a beacon of inspiration.  Congratulations Skylar!
